Sully –  The Movie Review

If you’re having trouble deciding between Baar Baar Dekho or Sully, then go watch the former. The typical Indian demographic which gorges on masala films will not enjoy this movie.

‘Sully’ is a movie trying to take a glimpse inside the life of a working class hero who saved 155 souls aboard a doomed flight by miraculously landing it safely on the Hudson river. It is a very heart-felt account of a man crowned a hero by the world overnight but is under harsh investigation by the air safety committee probably influenced by the insurance company. It depicts his internal struggle of self doubt inflicted by his critics against his skill, experience and instinct.

Sully is based on a true story – “the Miracle on the Hudson” – which happened in 2009 in New York. The plane was hit by a flock of geese just after take-off, completely damaging both its engines essentially rendering it into an oversized glider. The skill of the pilot is the only thing standing between life and death of the passengers and crew.

It is directed by Hollywood royalty, Clint Eastwood, and Captain Sully played by one, Tom Hanks. The direction is undramatic but crisp and engaging and Tom Hanks is well, Tom Hanks – sheer brilliance. Aaron Eckhart plays the superb supporting role as Sully’s first officer.
